Sylvia Moreno-Garcia has kind of flipped the vampire genre on its head here, combining Aztec and other lore to create a world with ten different kinds of vampires. And in this world, the vampires have become drug lords - warring against one another and human gangs as well. Drug wars, vampires, Mexico City and a smidge of history besides, and all set in the very near future, Certain Dark Things is a fabulous read. Fabulous! And highly original! And definitely one I'm recommending to EVERYONE!

From the start, Thomas Olde Heuvelt carefully and quietly builds an atmosphere of utter and complete dread. When we meet Black Spring, they’ve grown a bit ambivalent and have started to take Katherine for granted. Some folks fear her, sure, but others mock the witch and flaunt the town’s centuries-old laws concerning her. This is due in part to the fact that no one has really witnessed Katherine’s powers for quite some time: the last real incident was back in the 60s, after all, and though everyone knows of the deaths that occurred then many of them have brushed it off. It’s clear from the beginningof Hex that something bad is coming and that tension and suspense escalates fabulously throughout the book, bringing it to an eventual frenzied climax of some of the most awesome horrific imagery ever. Thomas Olde Heuvelt’s US debut is exactly the kind of book any horror fan will delight in reading and I absolutely can’t wait to see more from this Dutch author.

You know that friend who hates roller coasters? Who hates anything scary? Or thrilling? Anything to get your adrenaline going? The mode of peer pressure I prefer to get this friend to do the thing is: "Look, there are people getting off the ride," "There hasn't been a person who's gone up who hasn't made back down." "You see, they're leaving. Everyone survived this haunted house." But... what if they didn't? What if four people enter a haunted house and only three emerge? Let me introduce REPRIEVE, a debut novel by James Han Mattson, who answers this nightmare- fueled question in his sharp and engaging debut novel. In the middle of Nebraska sits of an ancient mansion that is the site a notorious full- contact haunted house where, if you can complete it, you win a generous cash prize. People travel from far and wide to attempt the seemingly impossible and the last group to ever attempt the house ends in grisly murder. Buckle up because that's just the tip of the iceberg. Mattson delves into race, immigration, and queerness all through the lens of horror and it is expertly done. It is the intersection of so many things and it has earned its place as an instant classic on my bookshelf.

This took me on such an emotional journey and left me feeling almost bereft of something once I'd finished. The emotional journey and development of the characters really got to me on a personal level and touched on a lot of hard truths of family and life. For the first time in a while, after finishing the final chapter, I had to sit and process everything I'd just read to fully be able to process the impact this novel had on me.

Gayle Foreman has given our young readers such a gift with FRANKIE & BUG! This is a book that belongs on every child's bookshelf; to teach the power of friendship, the need for empathy, and the courage to stand up for what is right. FRANKIE & BUG takes place in the 70s on Venice Beach. Bug wants to spend her summer on the beach, but is stuck at home with Frankie, her neighbor's nephew that is visiting for the summer. Frankie has no interest in the beach. He just wants to solve the Midnight Marouder serial killer case. Frankie & Bug don't really have any similar interests, until a new mystery arises that they must come together to save a life. Frankie & Bug prove that children are quite powerful and can actually change the world.

Wow. These Silent Woods is an amazing read. With the pacing of a thriller but the heart of something much deeper, this is the kind of book that keeps you up all night and really stays with you long after you finish. This is my introduction to Kimi Cunningham Grant's writing and I have to say that it packs a huge punch. It was easy to sink into the story and absolutely lose myself. And I was so utterly invested in Cooper's story that the book actually gave me nightmares. It's not really THAT kind of book, but becoming in entrenched in Cooper and Finch's lives for just under 300 pages was a whole experience for me! The self-imposed isolation and the literal isolation of the setting felt real to me. Not only that, but Cooper's determination to protect his daughter and the revelations of exactly what prompted that hit me hard as parent.

It doesn't solve any problems, but this bite-sized guided meditation gives you space. It's so simple and so beautiful. I loved it.
