Nicole Sullivan

Founder

Nicole Sullivan's love of all things books and reading led her to open BookBar in Spring 2013. After studying Culinary Arts at the Colorado Art Institute, she knew books, food, and wine would make a great combination. She is the founder and president of BookGive, BookBar's non-profit organization, and BookBar Press, launched in 2020. Also that year, she re-launched readclubhub.com, a website that matches readers to book clubs and book clubs to indie bookstores. Nicole also owns and operates BookBed, the author apartment above her store, which currently hosts a Writers-In-Residence program. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors for Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association. She holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Colorado and lives just a short cruiser bike ride from her store with her husband Ryan, 15-year-old son Jack, 13-year-old daughter Stella, and way too many (but also not enough) pets. She loves big ideas and small spaces. 

 

Jonah Kaplan

Bar Manager

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Jonah Kaplan grew up in his father's renowned stores, Books & Books. Although always having a love for books and for the business, Jonah pursued a career as a professional basketball player until an injury ended his career while studying at the University of Miami. Jonah then joined the family business, running the stores' restaurant operations, a role that evolved, over five years, along with is love for indie bookstores. "A bookstore is so much more than just a retail store. It's a community place that brings a certain magic and culture to its surrounding," says Kaplan. He moved to Denver, Colorado with his girlfriend, Candela, and their two dogs. 

 

Mara Kal

Marketing Coordinator

Mara hails from Toledo, Ohio (which is like, technically Michigan), attended undergrad at the University of Dayton, where she majored in English and Psychology and ended up in Colorado through the Denver Publishing Institute.  Loves all things queer, ghostly, and Harry Potter-related (excluding JK Rowling, who is a TERF). The only things she truly cares about are books and booze so BookBar was essentially her only career option.

 

Bess Maher

Event Coordinator

Bess came from a family of readers but always loved telling and writing stories as much as reading them. She also loves watching people and imagining fantastic backstories for them. Her father’s job taking them from Maadi, Egypt to New Port Richey, Florida, and quite a few cities in between, she caught the travel bug early and spent time in Rennes and Paris, France as an adult. She loves speaking French and watching French movies. Quiche remains one of the few dishes she cooks well. She lives in Denver with her family.

 

Marilyn Robbins

Children's Program Coordinator

Marilyn first became a reader by scouring the back of cereal boxes each morning. She fell in love with reading after spending countless hours with Ramona the Pest and her neighborhood friends. But, her greatest love is teaching children how to read and write. After retiring from 32 years of teaching, Marilyn finds herself back on Tennyson close to where her grandparents and great-grandparents had homes.

 

Kevin Peterson

Inventory Manager

Originally from Evanston, Illinois, Kevin has worked just about every job from a multi-year stint at Casa Bonita to appearing in a beloved or hated (depending on who you ask and what age you were when you originally saw) Christmas film. In addition to BookBar, Kevin is the program director of Denver Writes, a non-profit dedicated to creating writing spaces within Denver communities for children. An illustrator and playwright, his art appeared on the dearly departed ABC Family drama, Chasing Life, and his written work performed on stages in Colorado and New Mexico.

 

Becky Lejeune

Office Manager, Assistant Book Buyer

Becky LeJeune is the office manager and local author coordinator, working behind the scenes to organize the consignment program. When she’s not at BookBar, Becky is an associate literary agent and blogger. Which means she reads A LOT. You won’t see her in the store often but when you do, she’s likely browsing for more books to buy for her massive TBR or a cookbook for our next CookBook Book Club pick.

 

Candela Coudray

Assistant Children's Program Coordinator

Born and raised in Spain with a French Dad, Candela has adored literature of all kinds and languages since a very young age. When she moved to the US almost 13 years ago, she realized that if all cultures have one thing in common, it's books. She brings her linguistic gifts to BookBar, facilitating French, Spanish, and English storytimes. New to Denver, she is excited to be part of such a loving, fun, and exciting community of local culture. 

 

Moira Brownwolfe

Bookbartender

Moira was born in the American midwest in Bellona, home of the orchid. She spent an extended period of time traveling Europe where she quickly became tired of the tourist culture before a young man changed her outlook by recommending she take a room with a view. She likes to spend her free time on the island of Roke, lounging in the wizarding school's library. She enjoys cats and LGBTQIA+ fiction. 

 

Amanda Myers

Bookbartender

Amanda is from Littleton, CO, and is studying English and Art History at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She has lived in the Berkeley neighborhood for five years and enjoys all things coffee and book-related. Amanda loves to hike and paddleboard in the summer and in the winter she can be found in a blanket burrito with her two kitties and partner, Paul. Amanda caught the travel bug when visiting London and Paris and would love to explore Edinburgh next. You can typically find her devouring fiction or watching a ghost hunting show. 

 

Heather Garbo

Publishing Director: BookBar Press

Heather has worked in communications for two decades spanning the worlds of publishing, marketing, and community development. Her work has largely focused on her twin passions of community-building and supporting small indie businesses. In recent years Heather launched Denver Dweller, a hyper-local website created to encourage the patronizing of Denver’s local businesses. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Colorado at Denver and lives in northwest Denver with her family.

 

Melissa Monforti

Executive Director: BookGive

Melissa starts most mornings with a hike and ends them with a book. In between, she manages a household of various wild humans and one affectionate dog. Melissa has simultaneously built three small businesses. She has also served in various capacities from volunteer management to development to program direction. She holds a Master of Nonprofit Management from Regis University as a Colorado Trust Fellow. Her philosophy of nonprofit management is grounded in building and nourishing relationships. People support organizations that not only connect to their values but that make them feel connected to the larger community. Melissa’s leadership style is a balance of heart and mind, mixed in with a lot of rolling up of sleeves and a good dose of plain fun.
