Reading and Signing with Teri Emory: In Conversation with Heidi Mastrogiovanni

Join us for a reading and signing with Teri Emory, author of Second Acts. Terry will be in conversation with Heidi Mastrogiovanni.

From midtown Manhattan to a Florida suburb, from coastal Savannah to the hills of Rome, the interwoven tales of three lives unfold in the voices of Sarah, Miriam, and Beth. Their unshakable friendship takes root in a Buffalo college dorm in the late 1960s. Fueled by the optimism and bravado of that era, they charge into adulthood with lofty ideas and high expectations. They were, as Beth would later observe, “the first generation of women who felt entitled to interesting lives.”

In the year leading up to 9/11, the three women, now middle aged, are tested by unwelcome drama at home, unforeseen challenges at work, and unresolved conflicts about decisions made long ago. With emotional courage and wry humor, and sustained by their abiding friendship, the three confront hard truths about themselves and the choices they have made. They must dispel past regrets and make peace with present circumstances in order to flourish in the second acts of their lives. Second Acts is a story of love, loss, and renewal, and a testament to the enduring power of friendship.

Teri Emory is living proof that a liberal arts education (French literature? Psycholinguistics? Really?) does not necessarily make a person unemployable. As evidence: She has taught writing and literature at the University of North Florida, Hunter College, Yeshiva University, Fordham University, as well as several institutions of (alleged) higher learning that shall remain nameless here. She was lucky to live in Rome for a bit, where she taught English to Soviet immigrants awaiting relocation to the U. S. Her articles and poems have appeared in print and online publications, and she has edited essays and book-length manuscripts on absurdly esoteric topics.

Heidi Mastrogiovanni is a graduate of Wesleyan University and was chosen as one of ScreenwritingU’s 15 Most Recommended Screenwriters of 2013. The comedy web series she writes and produces, Verdene and Gleneda, was awarded the Hotspot on the Writers Guild of America’s Hotlist. Heidi is fluent in German and French, though she doesn’t understand why both these languages feel they need more than one definite article.

Heidi is a dedicated animal welfare advocate. She lives in Los Angeles with her musician husband and their rescued senior dogs. Heidi loves to read, hike, travel, and do a classic spit-take whenever something is really funny.

Lala Pettibone’s Act Two, Heidi’s first published novel, explores the themes present in all her work… It’s never too late to begin again, and it must be cocktail hour somewhere.
